the best thing to do is to buy the full edition of XP Pro, and reformat the drive.
That will take away any in proper files that might nevertheless be on the personal computer, and allow you update the personal computer legally, and give you the disk to use in case of other troubles

Your sound situation has absolutely nothing to do with reinstalling windows.

Just get on-line and reinstall the sound drivers for whatever sound card you have. That ought to fix it proper up.

You want to reinstall the sound drivers. Reinstalling WinXP is not the answer. Go to http://h18007.www1.hp.com/help/files/ and look up your model of Compaq. Up coming download the drivers for your model and install from there.

You should buy the recovery disc from Compaq, just in case you have to re-install Windows. However, the lack of the Windows/recovery CD doesn’t have anything to do with your lack of sound.

Look at the back of your computer. If your computer has a built-in sound card, then you should see at least three jacks which are 1/8″ in diameter. (These jacks are the same size used in portable MP3 players and walkmans for the headphones.) They are also usually coloured pink, lime green, and blue or cyan. If the jacks are there, then you need to go to Compaq’s web site and download and install the drivers for your sound card. (You’ll need to know the model # of your computer.)

If you don’t see the jacks, then you need to go to a computer store and buy a PCI sound card. Installing a PCI card is easy, but you can get the store to install it for you if you are uneasy about opening up your computer.
