I am using each of them (together openoffice and msoffice)
According to me:
–Openoffice has much less visual potential
–Openoffice has msoffice help but msoffice does not have openoffice assistance (eg. you can open msoffice’s doc files with openoffice)
–You can have visual difficulties even though you copy and paste to openoffice but you wont have this kind of troubles whilst functioning with ms workplace.
–also there can be compatibility problems about fonts among them so you have much less choice to select as a font.
So if you won’t do lots of copy and paste function or if you won’t use so much visual items this kind of as fonts you can use openoffice and save your files as .doc to make them compatible with msoffice.

If you conserve it as a word 2002-2003 (I believe) document it should perform on any Word product newer than that. I utilised OpenOffice all last year to create papers and I had no dilemma opening them up on Word 2007 at my college.
